Australian born and currently resident in France, Mark Summerbell has had a diverse career spanning four decades that encompasses a broad repertoire of concert and theatre works. At the heart of his repertoire is a passion and commitment to new music, reflected in his performance of over eighty-five world and Australian premieres.

 

The first conductor to be awarded a position with the Sydney Symphony under the Australia Council's conductor residency scheme, he has since conducted performances in Australia, the UK, USA, France, Japan, China and New Zealand and with orchestras and companies that include the Queensland Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Victoria, Adelaide Chamber Orchestra, Auckland Philharmonia, Opera Australia and The Australian Ballet.

 

As a distinguished and active figure in Australian contemporary music, he held music and artistic directorships with Ariel New Music, The Seymour Group, Chamber Made Opera and Music Theatre Sydney over a period of twenty years.

 

He has recorded for Vienna Modern Masters, ABC Classics, ABC Television and numerous live performances for ABC Radio, who regularly broadcast his recordings.

 

He is a Churchill Fellow and was awarded a Centenary Medal by the Australian Government for his achievements in the arts.
